Why would anyone purchase a DVD, and then purchase it again to download it, when you can easily rip your own copy for backup. Yes lets pay for it twice! I stopped shopping at Wal-mart anyway since they treat their workers like shit.
Wal-Mart, the worlds biggest retailer and corporate behemoth, has announced plans to begin testing a video digital download service beginning next year.
Though don't get too excited just yet, as it is part of a dual approach that ties digital downloads to the purchase of an actual DVD in the store. “We feel like it is really important that the DVD business stays healthy and stays quite central to consumers’ lives,” said Kevin Swint, a divisional merchandising manager at Wal-Mart..
Though not officially opening until next year, it is currently allowing customers who buy the DVD of "Superman Returns" to also download a copy to a portable video device for $1.97, to a PC for $2.97, or both for $3.97.
Ironically though, the movie studios are already arguing over the prices charged to customers as they are afraid that these low prices will become ingrained as the going rate for online movie download purchases. They feel that it would be better to provide the downloads free to DVD buyers, making them clearly a promotional item.
